Simple syrup is a staple of the home bartender’s pantry and really easy to make. It keeps several weeks in the fridge and can be used to sweeten any cold drink.
Basic Recipe (yields 3/4 cup of syrup)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup water
Mix the sugar and water in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved. Let cool and store in a bottle in the fridge.
Basil Infused Simple Syrup (yields 3/4 cup of syrup)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup water
20 basil leaves
peel from half a lemon
Mix the sugar and water in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved. Add the basil and lemon peel. Let steep for 15 minutes. Strain syrup in a bottle and store in the fridge.
